Out of sight, out of mind

In 1900, man-made objects were equivalent only to 3% of global biomass. In 2020, the mass of these materials overtook that of all biological organisms, reaching a total of 1.1 teratonnes. So-called anthropogenic mass is projected to triple global biomass by 2040.

The bricks in these sculptures almost certainly derive from Moss Tegelverk: a local brick factory that was shuttered in 1919 and demolished in 1940. Still, a century later, these odd and semi-eroded bricks still wash up on the shores of Jeløya in a seemingly endless supply.

Presented at Hvitsten Salong in August 2024.

In between the bricks that compose the ornaments are crushed decommissioned harddrives donated/rescued from Delete IT in Moss. Physical data. The cloud is not in the clouds.

The block-like construction is filled with plastic debris, glitter, broken toys and obsolete cables.
